Hello! My name is Kala. I was born in Ketchikan, Alaska. I am happily married. We have an awesome and adorable chocolate lab named Kona. My husband and I enjoy anything outdoors including camping, shooting, hiking, and fishing. As a child, I always loved going to see my Dentist. Having braces at the young age of 9 made me very aware of my oral hygiene. I would sit on the bathroom counter with my floss every night and weave each area between each bracket. Some nights I made it a game, against myself of course, to floss as quickly as possible. My Hygienist was like my flossing cheerleader every six months. I always wanted her approval. As a young adult, choosing a career was like choosing a favorite star. I wanted to do everything, the sky was the limit. Like most people in their early 20's, I wanted a "grown-up" job. The dental field had always been in the back of my mind. After talking to a few friends that are dental assistants, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in the dental field. Most people think teeth aren't very interesting. I think teeth are actually cool! I have been a Registered Dental Assistant for over 7 years. I did not go to assisting school, rather I got my x-ray license on my own and started the search for a dentist that would let me start with no experience. After working for a year, I was able to challenge the board and take my written test and practical in San Francisco. While working as an RDA, I took my prerequisites for hygiene school. Working as a full time RDA and going to school at nights was tough, thankfully during this time my husband has been my support. Now as I continue my adventure of becoming a Dental Hygienist, I strive to be an encouragement to those in my class to achieve their goals. I am the class president of an amazing group of gals. As as Dental Hygienist, I hope to make people laugh and enjoy coming to the dentist office. I will remind my patients to "brush them every day, or they will fade away. *" This website will serve as location to track assignements pertaining to Dental Hygiene patients with special needs and assinments relating to Periodontics. I will be reading journal articles and writing what I have learned and how this knowledge will help me in my Hygiene career.
